The nomadic Uzbek people of central asia used to live in tents. In the region which is covered by our collection they are made of felt and are called yurts.
The yurt and all of the rest of their household was transported mainly by camels. So the walls of their home, their furniture and nearly all containers are made of wool or similar material which could be displaced easily. In this section we want to show you the basic knotted and woven material.
We own a kyrgyz yurt which is relatively new, but the size and shape has not been altered for centuries.
As we are mainly interested in the Uzbek
napramach, we
divided this section into "rugs and carpets" on the one side and the
napramach on the other side, although the latter is also a rug.
